In the aftermath of Charlie Kirk’s shooting, the media has embarked on a truly Olympian feat: the canonization of a man whose political career was built on dividing Americans, stoking bigotry, and weaponizing youthful ignorance into a business model.

In death, Charlie Kirk has achieved what in life he could never quite pull off: being treated as a Serious Political Figure rather than a carnival barker for the culture wars.

Cable chyrons now read like hagiographies. “Champion of Free Speech,” “Voice for America’s Youth,” “Conservative Leader Taken Too Soon.” The only thing missing is a papal blessing and a commemorative postage stamp. Funny how the same networks that ignored his sneering homophobia, his race-baiting rhetoric, and his gleeful demonization of immigrants suddenly discovered their inner poets when it was time to eulogize him.

A Martyr Made for Primetime

If you relied solely on Fox News or sympathetic right-wing outlets, you might think Kirk was gunned down on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial while clutching a pocket Constitution and whispering “liberty.” What you won’t hear about is how Kirk built Turning Point USA into an ideological machine that churned out division like a factory assembly line, normalizing cruelty toward LGBTQ Americans, vilifying Black Lives Matter activists, and providing the intellectual cover for a generation of bigoted frat bros.

But no, let’s not mention any of that. Let’s stick to slow-motion video tributes with swelling orchestral scores, footage of Kirk shaking hands at rallies, and carefully curated quotes about “faith” and “freedom.” Apparently, the quickest path to redemption in American politics is death — as long as you were on the right side of the ideological divide.

The FBI: Keystone Cops with Better Suits

Then there’s the FBI. If the Bureau wanted to demonstrate its ability to fumble a politically sensitive case, mission accomplished. At first, we were told the shooting was likely “gang-related.” Then it was “probably domestic terrorism.” Then it was “a lone wolf.” Each day brought a new theory, delivered with the false confidence of a student who didn’t do the reading but talks anyway.

The punchline? The suspect they eventually settled on had already been flagged by multiple sources and practically gift-wrapped for them. Local investigators had raised the alarm. Even community groups had identified the individual online. But the FBI, true to form, spent weeks chasing shadows while ignoring the suspect who was, figuratively speaking, jumping up and down in front of them with a neon sign.

When the Bureau finally did make an arrest, the announcement carried the smug tone of an agency that thinks it cracked the Zodiac cipher, not one that tripped into the answer after bumbling around like Inspector Clouseau. And yet, no one in leadership will pay a price for the incompetence. They never do.

Fox News and the Left-as-Bogeyman Machine

While the FBI tripped over its shoelaces, Fox News and the conservative ecosystem got to work spinning the shooting into a morality play. The script practically wrote itself: Kirk wasn’t just a victim of violence, he was the latest martyr of the Left’s “war on America.”

Night after night, Fox News anchors breathlessly linked the killing to Democrats, to activists, to nebulous “leftist rhetoric.” The actual evidence? Thin as tissue paper. But in the age of outrage-driven cable news, evidence is optional. The goal was clear: make Kirk’s death a referendum on progressive politics.

This is how propaganda works. Don’t mention the years Kirk spent mocking LGBTQ people as degenerates. Don’t mention his speeches about immigrants “destroying Western culture.” Don’t mention his gleeful trolling of mass shooting survivors. Instead, paint him as a clean-cut patriot slain by the forces of chaos unleashed by Democrats, professors, and TikTok influencers.

The result? Millions of viewers convinced that Charlie Kirk didn’t die because of America’s ongoing epidemic of political violence, but because “the Left” as a monolithic entity had essentially pulled the trigger.

The Martyrdom Industry

If all this sounds familiar, it should. We’ve seen this movie before. Whenever a conservative figure dies under tragic or mysterious circumstances, the playbook is deployed:

  1. Step One: Erase the messy reality of their words and actions.
  2. Step Two: Elevate them to hero status, preferably with lots of B-roll footage of flags.
  3. Step Three: Blame the Left, regardless of facts.
  4. Step Four: Use the tragedy to raise money and mobilize the base.

Charlie Kirk’s death has become just another entry in the right-wing martyrdom industry, where grief is monetized and weaponized for political gain. Turning Point USA’s fundraising emails now read like a cross between a wake and a telethon. “Charlie’s fight continues — with your donation.” The cynicism would be breathtaking if it weren’t so predictable.

The Media’s Complicity

To be fair, Fox News isn’t alone in the whitewash. Mainstream outlets, desperate to appear balanced, have tiptoed around Kirk’s legacy as well. The New York Times and CNN offered the standard “divisive but influential” language, as though his record of amplifying hate speech were just another quirky personality trait.

This is the great American media sickness: the reflex to launder reputations in the name of decorum. When the obituary is written, it’s all about “impact” and “controversy,” not the very real harm done to marginalized people who were targets of Kirk’s rhetoric. Heaven forbid we speak ill of the dead, even if the dead made a career out of speaking ill of everyone else.

The Left Responds — or Tries To

Progressives, meanwhile, are caught in the impossible bind of trying to tell the truth without sounding celebratory. Pointing out Kirk’s long record of hateful statements risks being labeled insensitive. Remaining silent risks allowing the revisionist narrative to harden into fact. It’s a no-win scenario, designed that way by a media ecosystem allergic to complexity.

A Death, a Narrative, a Warning

Charlie Kirk is gone. But the narrative being built in his wake will linger long after the investigation closes. He will be remembered not for what he actually said and did, but for the sanitized version beamed into American living rooms. That is a tragedy all its own — one that compounds the damage of his political career by ensuring future generations will misunderstand it.

The FBI will pat itself on the back for eventually catching the suspect it was handed on a platter. Fox News will continue its nightly dirges about the Left’s supposed violence. And the mainstream press will keep mouthing its euphemisms, too polite to state the obvious: Charlie Kirk was not a saint, and his death does not erase the harm he caused.

If there’s any lesson here, it’s not about Kirk himself. It’s about us — our media, our institutions, and our inability to face uncomfortable truths. When we canonize villains in death, we invite new ones in life.

And so, in Topeka or Tucson, in New York or Nashville, the cycle will continue: a country so addicted to martyrdom that it can’t even tell the truth about the people it chooses to sanctify.
