Washington, D.C. — In a dramatic escalation of congressional scrutiny into the Justice Department’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein investigation, a House Oversight subcommittee voted 8–2 on Wednesday to subpoena the DOJ for all files related to the late financier’s sex trafficking case. The vote, which saw three Republicans break ranks to join Democrats, comes amid explosive revelations that President Donald Trump was personally informed in May that his name appears multiple times in the Epstein files . The Subpoena Vote: A Bipartisan Flashpoint
The motion to subpoena was introduced by Rep. Summer Lee (D-Pa.), who emphasized the need for transparency and accountability. “Whether you are the littlest guy or the most powerful person in this nation, if you commit a crime, there must be accountability,” Lee said during the hearing.(3)
Republican Reps. Nancy Mace (S.C.), Scott Perry (Pa.), and Brian Jack (Ga.) joined Democrats in approving the motion, defying GOP leadership and President Trump’s calls to move past the Epstein issue(4) The subpoena demands the release of all DOJ files related to Epstein, including communications between DOJ officials and high-profile figures such as former Presidents Bill Clinton and Donald Trump, as well as former FBI directors and attorneys general(5).
Rep. Perry also introduced a motion to expand the investigation to include subpoenas for testimony from Clinton, Hillary Clinton, James Comey, Robert Mueller, Merrick Garland, William Barr, and others.
Trump Briefed on Epstein Files in May
According to a bombshell report from The Wall Street Journal, Attorney General Pam Bondi and Deputy AG Todd Blanche informed Trump in May that his name appeared “multiple times” in the Epstein files(1)(2.) The briefing reportedly included mention of other high-profile individuals and was described as routine, though the inclusion of Trump’s name has sparked intense public interest.
The DOJ told Trump that the files contained unverified hearsay and sensitive material, including child pornography and victims’ personal information, which they cited as reasons for withholding further public release(6)
Despite this, Trump publicly denied being told his name was in the files. When asked by ABC News on July 15 whether Bondi had informed him of his inclusion, Trump responded, “No, no, she’s given us just a very quick briefing”(6). This contradiction has fueled speculation about the administration’s motives and transparency.
Fallout and Political Ramifications
The subpoena vote has thrown Congress into turmoil. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) sent lawmakers home early for the August recess, reportedly to avoid further votes on Epstein-related legislation(7). Democrats have seized on the moment, accusing Republicans of shielding powerful figures from accountability.
“Why haven’t Republicans released the Epstein files to the American people?” asked House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. “It’s reasonable to conclude that Republicans are continuing to protect the lifestyles of the rich and the shameless—even if that includes pedophiles”(7).
Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) framed the issue as a test of government integrity: “Is our government co-opted by rich and powerful people, or can we have a government that looks out for ordinary Americans?”(7).
DOJ and FBI Defend Their Review
In a joint statement, Bondi and Blanche reiterated that the DOJ and FBI found no evidence warranting further prosecution and have filed motions to unseal grand jury transcripts2. FBI Director Kash Patel echoed this, stating, “The memo released on July 6th is consistent with the thorough review conducted by the FBI and DOJ. The criminal leakers and Fake News media try tirelessly to undermine President Trump with smears and lies”.
However, Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin revealed that FBI personnel were instructed to “flag” any records mentioning Trump, based on a protected whistleblower disclosure. This revelation has intensified calls for full transparency.
Trump’s History with Epstein
Trump’s long-standing relationship with Epstein has resurfaced in recent weeks. CNN uncovered photos of Epstein attending Trump’s 1993 wedding to Marla Maples and footage of the two men laughing together at a 1999 Victoria’s Secret fashion show(8). The Wall Street Journal also reported that Trump sent Epstein a sexually suggestive birthday letter in 2003, which included the message: “Happy Birthday — and may every day be another wonderful secret”(8).
Trump has denied the authenticity of the letter and sued the Journal for defamation, seeking $10 billion in damages(9).
What Happens Next?
Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) must now sign the subpoena for it to be formally issued. The committee has also subpoenaed Epstein’s former girlfriend and convicted accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell, for a deposition scheduled for August 11(10).
Whether the DOJ complies with the subpoena remains uncertain. Legal experts note that grand jury materials are protected and may require court approval to be released. Still, the political pressure is mounting.
