A financial news website published an article Saturday identifying Topeka as being the most violent city in Kansas — and the 32nd most nationwide — among those that have a population of more than 100,000.
The article was published by Business Insider, an American financial and business news website that also operates international editions.
The website said the FBI recently released crime statistics it compiled for the period of January to June of 2017 for U.S. cities with populations of more than 100,000.
“Among the data was the number of violent crimes committed in these cities, including murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault,” the article said. “We then took these violent crime rates per 10,000 people to rank the most violent city in each state.”
The website listed the cities with the 40 highest violent crime rates.

Topeka — the only city in Kansas on the list — had 29.2 violent crimes per 10,000 residents, it said.
Census records show the other cities in Kansas with populations of at least 100,000 are Wichita, Kansas City, Kan., Overland Park and Olathe.
Business Insider noted that 10 states either did not report their data, as was the case with Texas, or did not have a city with more than 100,000 people, as was the case with Wyoming.
“Therefore, the list is not complete,” it said.
The website identified the nation’s most violent city as Baltimore, Maryland, with 98.6 violent crimes per 10,000 residents.
