Topeka Fire crews respond to mulch fires at City Forestry facility
TOPEKA, Kan. – On April 6, 2024, just before 5 p.m., crews from the Topeka Fire Department (TFD)
responded to the report of heavy smoke at City Forestry’s Garick Recycling Center, located at 2200 NW
Waterworks Way. Upon arrival, crews found heavy smoke and multiple large piles of mulch on fire.
Additional TFD assistance was requested as well as a mutual aid request from the Soldier Township Fire
Department.
At this time, crews continue to work on suppressing the fires. TFD response included 5 Engine
Companies, 2 Brush Trucks and 2 Battalion Chiefs. No structures have been affected and no injuries have
been reported. Additional updates are expected within the next 48 hours.
Update
On April 7, 2024, around 4 a.m., TFD crews were able to extinguish the fires at the Forestry’s Garick
Recycling Center.
As a precautionary measure, the Recycling Center will be closed to the public on Monday April 8, 2024.
TFD personnel and Garick staff will determine on Monday April 8, whether the Recycling Center will be
open on Tuesday, April 9. Updates are expected.
The City of Topeka Forestry Division will be operating as usual. For tree-related emergencies, citizens
can call Utilities at (785) 368-3111.
