Kansas City, Lawrence & Topeka
Hello! And welcome to this week’s Northeast Kansas weekend concerts calendar — your Dystopeka.com LIVE Music guide to Topeka, Lawrence, and Kansas City.
The spine and bloodline of this calendar is supplied by NEKS.show — a handy, simple, quick, and easy concert calendar. Go bookmark it.
Topeka shows get a big letter T in front of them. Why? Because we care.
Got a show you want on here? Email the link to the Facebook event page (or your own site with the concert info) to submitshow@neks.show.
This is the big one: the Soul Fire Sabbath Festival runs all three days of this weekend at Truckhenge Farm right here in Topeka — three days of music, art, and camping, kicked off by a deep partial lunar eclipse the night before gates open. It’s got its own Editor’s Pick callout in every day below, but the short version is: clear your weekend.
If you noticed something missing from this week’s calendar, it might be because we lost a handful of venues in the last couple of weeks. Elmo’s in Lawrence closed its doors, Doughboyz Pizza in North Topeka shut down (they occasionally had live music events), Artismo Bistro went out with a whimper, and the biggest loss was 6th & Polk in Topeka closing its doors. All as I predicted several issues back.
Other businesses are having a hard time too. You can debate it all you want, but this is the Trump economy in action. I’ve written several articles about the unseen, and seen, forces that affect live music venues.
But when one (or four) doors close, another opens. And the people behind some of these venues have said not to count them out — they’ll pop back up somewhere else eventually. Topeka is an especially hard nut to crack. I’ve tried to lure in bigger promoters over the years, and more than one has told me flat out that this town isn’t worth the trouble. And what’s even more fucked is that certain people in Topeka have some really idiotic ideas about competition, on top of their stupid ideas about running a venue. Much smaller towns have much more going on than Topeka, and everyone gets their fair share.
But it’s not all dim and dark. I hear chatter about potential new spots, and I’ve seen locations that could easily become live music homes. It’s just maddening because I know that the minute someone tries to do something in this town, they instantly become a target for some deranged idiot to try to sabotage. I’ll be here letting you know about it as soon as something tangible happens. But what would really help all boats float is if you actually showed up to a few gigs.

A late Thursday triple bill closing out the night at Replay Lounge — Shwarma, Godzillionare, and The Elektrik Band. Three different flavors on one stage — the kind of loose, thrown-together lineup that ends up being the most fun show of the week almost by accident.
Godzillionare is one to watch, besides — you weren’t actually going to go to that bullshit at Evergy Plaza, were you?

- Secret Shopper’s PickGreen Jellÿ — Sk8Bar, Saturday, 7:00 PM

“Why don’t you sit right back and I may tell you a tale of the three little pigs and a big bad wolf.”
If you don’t know where the song goes from there, you have lived a sheltered life! When Green Jellÿ unleashed this comedy rock masterpiece, “Three Little Pigs,” in 1992, did anybody expect it to still draw fans 34 years later? Bill Manspeaker called on friends Les Claypool from Primus, Maynard James Keenan and Danny Carey from Tool, Pauly Shore from MTV, and a host of others to create a sort of rock opera that rose to be a Top 20 single. If you haven’t seen the stop motion Claymation music video for “Three Little Pigs,” you owe it to yourself to pull it up on your favorite video sharing service.
Green Jellÿ (or is it Green Jellö?) has never taken themselves too seriously. Their show is somewhat silly, with costumes, pool noodles, inflatables, circus performers, and other surprises, but it is always a lot of fun. Crowd participation is mandatory.
Green Jellÿ will perform live at Sk8Bar in Westport on Saturday, August 29 at 7:00 PM. From This Day Forward (crunkcore from Michigan), Beneath the Skin (metal from KC), Cheese Man (punk from KC), and Heater (hard rock / heavy metal from KC) will be opening. Sk8Bar has quickly established itself as a premiere music venue for alternative and underground music since moving to Westport from St. Joseph 2 years ago.

Further Reading & Help Us Keep the Scene Loud
If this week’s lineup — and the venues missing from it — got you thinking about the bigger picture, here’s where to go next.
Help Us Keep the Scene Loud
We’re not a venue, a label, or a ticketing company — just local music fans who got tired of missing shows because nobody had put them all in one place. Building a calendar like this one means chasing down Facebook events, tracking down real flyers, double-checking set times, and making sure a cancelled gig doesn’t waste your Friday night. It takes real hours, and Dystopeka.com doesn’t run ads to cover them.
If this calendar has ever gotten you into a room you wouldn’t have found otherwise, saved you from showing up to a cancelled show, or just made following the local scene a little easier — chip in if you can. Every bit goes straight back into covering more shows, not into anyone’s pocket.
Dystopeka.com’s music coverage is run by local music fans, for local music fans. No advertisers, no label kickbacks — just people who love a good show trying to make the scene a little easier to find and follow.
