Topeka nightlife survey
Topeka’s nightlife has a pulse problem, and everybody’s got a theory about why. Brain drain. No all-ages spaces. Nobody feels safe walking to their car after last call. Bands playing to five people while venues quietly go under. Pick your favorite explanation — we’ve heard them all, secondhand, from people who never actually got asked.
So we’re asking.
This is a real survey, not a corporate “market research” thing — about 15 minutes, fully anonymous unless you choose to leave contact info at the very end. It covers what you’re into, which venues you actually go to (Topeka, Lawrence, KC, Manhattan, Wichita — wherever), how you find out about shows, whether you feel safe going out, whether you’re planning to leave this town for good, and why. No “correct” answers. We want what you actually think, not what sounds good.

Share this with anyone in NE Kansas who goes to shows, plays in a band, books a room, or has strong opinions about Topeka they’ve never been asked about. The more people who answer honestly, the more this actually means something — to venues, to whoever in city government pretends to care, to anyone trying to make the case that this scene is worth investing in.
🎸 Keep Projects Like This Running 🎸
Building surveys, hosting data, writing this stuff up — none of it’s free, even when it’s a labor of love. If you want to help keep independent projects like this alive, here’s how:
Gimme Some Money. I don’t sell advertising on this website. I make little person trades with local businesses that I like and respect. In the mean time, these websites do incur a certain expense, that I pay for out of my own pocket. So would it really hurt you to throw me a few bones? Below are my donation routs.
That’s this week’s Northeast Kansas Weekend Concert Roundup – see you out there.
Event feed sourced from NEKS.show. Come for the guitars. Stay for the weird.
We’ve Been Doing This For Years.
Where Were You?
Before you take this survey and tell us Topeka’s nightlife is on life support — a quick reality check. Dystopeka’s been publishing free weekend concert calendars, tracking down what’s actually happening at city hall, and doing unpaid research nobody asked for since before half of you knew what an RSS feed was. We didn’t need a survey to figure out this town needed attention. We just showed up. Repeatedly. For free. Still doing it right now, actually.
- This week’s live music calendar — yes, we do this every single week. Yes, still for free.
- Last week’s roundup — also free, also us, also nobody paid us to care.
- The full Topeka events archive — if you want proof this isn’t a one-time bit.
- Our Shawnee County data center investigation — while you were arguing about cover charges, we were reading zoning resolutions line by line so somebody had to.
- We also cover things that have nothing to do with music — because apparently somebody around here has to pay attention to the rest of the world too.
Anyway. Take the survey. We’ll keep doing this regardless of what you tell us — we’re just curious if the rest of you are paying attention yet.
